News: Skilled workers can no longer apply for a residence permit for Norwegian studies

As of May 15th 2014, it is no longer possible to apply for a residence permit for skilled workers who are going to study Norwegian. This is also the case for applications for renewal of such a residence permit.

This has been decided by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

Information for those who applied before May 15th

If you applied for a residence permit for skilled workers who are going to study Norwegian before May 15th, the UDI will continue to process your application as normal. The application will be considered according to the same rules as those which were in force until May 15th.

You will find up-to-date information about case processing times and other practical information at www.udi.no/norwegiancourse.

What happens if you apply after May 14th?

If you apply for a residence permit for skilled workers who are going to study Norwegian after May 14th, your application will be rejected. Your application fee will not be refunded.

What is the reason why the rules have changed?

The reason why the Ministry of Justice and Public Security has decided to change the rules is, among other reasons, that only a few of those who applied for this kind of residence permit later got skilled work in Norway. The regulations were also abused by persons who did not intend to learn Norwegian in order to work in Norway.
